The Opportunity
ElectraNet is seeking a full-time Senior Power Systems Engineer to join our Network Capability team and support, the secure, reliable and future-focused performance of South Australia's high-voltage transmission network, based in Adelaide, South Australia.
This role provides hands-on power system modelling, analysis and technical advice across network capability, system security, operational planning and customer connection outcomes. You will work on complex power system challenges in an increasingly inverter-dominated network, including transfer capability, voltage control, frequency performance, system strength, fault levels, stability, operational limits and connection related assessments. The role suits an experienced engineer who enjoys deep technical analysis, practical problem solving and producing robust, regulator-defensible advice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, validate and maintain fit-for-purpose power system models using tools such as PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, Mudpack/SSAT and related analysis platforms.
- Undertake system capability and security assessments, including transfer limits, voltage and reactive power analysis, frequency performance, system strength and fault level studies.
- Deliver operational planning studies, including contingency analysis, constraint identification, outage assessments and scenario-based studies.
- Support generator, load and storage connection studies, including performance and compliance assessments.
- Provide technical advice to support network augmentation projects, operational decision-making and alignment with National Electricity Rules and AEMO requirements.
- Apply Python, automation and data analytics to improve the efficiency, consistency and repeatability of studies.
- Build trusted relationships with internal teams, customers and industry stakeholders, including Network Planning, Network Protection, Network Security, Network Connections, SAPN and AEMO.
About You
You are an experienced power systems engineer with strong hands-on modelling and analysis capability. You bring sound technical judgement, strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex power system issues into clear, defensible advice. Experience with transmission networks, operational planning, system security, inverter based resources and connection related studies will be highly regarded.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or above
- Extensive experience in transmission power system engineering, power system analysis or a related engineering discipline.
- Hands-on experience using power system analysis and modelling tools such as PSS/E, PowerFactory, PSCAD, Mudpack/SSAT or similar.
- Strong capability in power system modelling, validation, system security and operational planning studies.
- Deep technical understanding of voltage control, frequency performance, dynamic stability, system strength, fault levels and inverter-based resources.
- Experience with contingency analysis, transfer capability studies, outage studies and constraint identification.
- Knowledge of relevant industry requirements, including the National Electricity Rules, AEMO frameworks, ESCOSA and OTR requirements.
- Experience with Python, automation or advanced analytics to support repeatable and efficient technical studies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, to build trusted relationships and explain complex technical information clearly.
- Eligibility for membership of Engineers Australia or a relevant professional association. Chartered status or equivalent is desirable.
